To create the “Horse of a Different Color,” the production used food coloring mixed with other unstable dyes directly on the animals’ coats. The horses had to be kept from licking themselves because the mixture wasn’t safe for ingestion, so handlers stood off-camera constantly distracting them during filming.

The dye also stained anything the horses brushed against, requiring fast cleanup between takes. Although the scene became a fan favorite, the methods used reflected the era’s lack of animal safety standards. The colorful effect looked magical on screen, but behind the scenes it was far from harmless.
