#4: The Production Fired Multiple Directors Mid-Shoot
The Wizard of Oz began filming without a clear creative direction, and the studio cycled through several directors in quick succession. Richard Thorpe was the first to be removed after only a few weeks. George Cukor stepped in briefly, then left for another project. Victor Fleming eventually took over, but even he didn’t finish the film—King Vidor completed the final scenes after Fleming was reassigned.

These constant changes created confusion on set. Each director had a different vision, leading to scenes being reworked or reshot entirely. The shifting leadership disrupted the cast, inflated the budget, and contributed to the already chaotic energy that would come to define the troubled production.
