#28: Rutherford B. Hayes Banned Alcohol at White House Parties
Rutherford B. Hayes turned the White House into a dry zone, banning alcohol at official events. Instead of wine or cocktails, guests were offered lemonade — so much so that people jokingly called it “Lemonade Lucy” after his wife, who fully supported the booze-free policy.

It didn’t exactly thrill diplomats used to toasting with something stronger, but Hayes stuck to his principles. Oddly enough, the sober approach sometimes worked in his favor, catching political opponents off guard and keeping meetings surprisingly civil. Still, it’s probably the least raucous administration in history.
